Sustainable Swim

As we prepare to slide into summer with its gloriously sunny weekends and seaside dips, spare a thought for our precious marine life. An estimated 50-80% of all life on earth is found under the ocean surface. With statistics showing 8 million tonnes of waste and 640 thousand tons of fishing nets are being abandoned annually, our beloved sea life is in grave danger. 

"By 2050, it's predicted our seas will house more rubbish than marine life," says Ellenny Swim designer Megan Davis. "I believe we all need to play our part in protecting the world's natural environments, and that includes taking an honest look at how we produce and wear fashion, starting with swimwear. The possibilities for bathers is infinite. Our natural resources aren't."

It's no secret fashion hasn't always been the most eco-friendly industry. Currently, it accounts for 2% of global Gross Domestic Product and is considered one of the largest polluters in the world.  Knowing how we can contribute to such a vast and alarming issue is perplexing, yet we can all play our part, starting with how we shop. With spring nearly here, begin by shopping responsibly and supporting pro-planet brands that put the environment first.

How you care for your swimwear also impacts the environment.  When properly looked after, a pair of bathers can last years, not just a season. Whether you wear your swimwear daily or just once in a while, the fabric can take a beating from pool chemicals, salt water, sand, high temperatures, and sunscreen. Removing contaminants as soon as possible is essential, as is washing them carefully by hand. If you absolutely must wash a bathing suit in the washing machine, put it in a mesh bag meant for delicate garments, use an ultra-mild detergent, and choose the delicate cycle.
